Lucy, my 21-year old double-headed amazon parrot, laid her second egg in two years today. Her first egg, laid approximately one year ago was probably more of a surprise to her than it was to me. It happened in the middle of the night after some struggling 'pushing' noises. She spent the next two days 'recoveries' acting sluggish and resting. However, this time didn't seem to phase her much. She sat quietly for about 2 hours after the egg dropped on the floor of her cage after perhaps 5 minutes of on-and-off kinda-high-pitched bird grunting. She seems to be back to herself in a very short period of time. I immediately removed the egg from the cage when I heard it hit the floor as I was working on photos at my computer just around the corner. Lucy gave me no trouble.
This second egg's shell is a lot smoother on the outside than the first one was. The first one had calcium deposits, I guess you could call them, all over the egg.
I kept the first egg, blew out its contents and it sits under glass in a display. I will now need to figure out how to display her second egg. There is plenty of room in the current display to put both. Pictures to follow ...
